St. Mary's Hospital

The hospital was located at the west end of Zumbro Street (Second Street SW). It officially opened Oct. 1, 1889, with 45 beds. The first year, St. Mary's served 300 patients. During 1916, the patient load was 8,053. Charges depended on location and accommodations. War rates in 1919 were $15 to $20 a week. Private rooms were $25 a week and up. By 1920, the hospital had served almost 100,000 patients. Worrall Hospital was built in 1928 on the north side of Third Street SW for eye, ear, nose and throat cases. The Worrall had three operating rooms and 125 patient rooms. Other hospitals at the time were the Colonial and the Stanley.
