Distance: 42 miles
The Root River State Trail offers spectacular views of the river carved limestone bluffs of the Root River Valley. The trail is a multiple use trail with hiking, biking, in-line skating, and wheelchair access. During winter months, cross country skiing is popular. The trail runs through the quaint, scenic communities of Fountain, Lanesboro, Whalan, Peterson, Rushford and Houston. The eastern portion of the trail, with a very steep half mile segment, is considerably more challenging than the western section of the trail.
